Farmworker communities in Florida have been hit hard by Hurricane Irma. Many of the homes workers rent have been destroyed and their clothing and other possessions ruined. Even nearly two weeks after, there is still no power, no gas, no safe water and a severe shortage of food, clothing, and medicine — and with many crops ruined, work is scarce. Immokalee farmworkers are among the millions on the front lines of climate change.

Florida farmworkers’ decades-long struggle for justice in the fields, led by the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, has achieved historic changes for human rights in the fields and inspired communities everywhere; they have won demands from some of largest corporations in the world to transform conditions and pay in agriculture.

Today, we must respond to the immediate needs of Immokalee, and in the long haul, continue standing with farmworkers in their struggle to transform the conditions in which they live and work.

This event is being coordinated by folks living in New York who’ve organized in solidarity with Immokalee farmworkers for years. Many of us have lived and worked in Immokalee, and all of us have been shaped and inspired by the leadership of this community that we love.
