Regional Organizer for the Mid-Atlantic/New England (Full-time)

 

The Food Chain Workers Alliance (FCWA) is a coalition of worker-based organizations whose members plant, harvest, process, pack, transport, prepare, serve, and sell food.  We organize to improve wages and working conditions for all workers along the food chain. The Alliance works together to build a more sustainable food system that respects workers’ rights, based on the principles of social, environmental and racial justice–in which everyone has access to healthy and affordable food.  The FCWA is growing, both as an organization and in terms of our work. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Regional Organizer for the Mid-Atlantic/New England will work to support the FCWA member organizations in the area, coordinate the Good Food Purchasing Program (GFPP) campaign in New York City with our core allies, support the GFPP campaign in Washington, D.C., and provide staffing for the May Day United–a coalition that is looking to move beyond May 1 mobilization to build strategies and actions for expanding the movement. This position’s responsibilities include:

 

        • Provide direct support to local coalitions in the region that are campaigning to win adoption of the GFPP – especially where there is no coalition staff – and assist with strategy development and implementation
        • Organize support among allies for FCWA members in the region who request solidarity and mobilization for their organizing and policy campaigns
  • Connect local members and GFPP coalitions to potential local and national allies
  • Be the staff support for our member leaders in the May Day United coalition
  • Provide support to local GFPP coalitions for fundraising and grant development when possible
  • Present on the FCWA and our members’ work at conferences, colleges & universities, and other opportunities that arise
  • Assist with organizing the annual worker leaders summits, the regional Justice in the Food Chain trainings, and other events as needed
  • Assist with fundraising for the FCWA

 

Our IDEAL CANDIDATE will possess the following:

  • Commitment to building racial and social justice through leadership
    development, community organizing and popular education.
  • Ability to develop innovative strategies and tactics for campaigns.
  • A minimum of 3-years of experience in community, worker-center, or union organizing.
  • Experience on an organizing and/or policy campaign
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Experience with coalitions.
  • Ability and willingness to work non-traditional hours such as nights and weekends.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Good time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Grassroots and foundation fundraising experience.
  • Detail-oriented and ability to work under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and verbal communication skills.
  • High levels of self-motivation and independence, as well as the ability to work as a team.
  • Facility with using common computer software, information databases, internet, social media, and email.
  • Bi- or multi-lingual (oral and written) in Spanish and/or another language.

 

This position can be located anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic/New England area, although our preference is New York City. Ideally, the position will begin August 1, 2017, in order to join us at our staff retreat August 10-13, 2017, but we are flexible on the start date so we can hire the best person for this position.
