Oct. 28, 2010 – The Food Chain Workers Alliance issued a resolution in support of SINALTRAINAL today.
WHEREAS SINALTRAINAL is a union organizing to protect the rights and the lives of food industry workers in Colombia;
WHEREAS SINALTRAINAL has started a campaign and passed a resolution calling for the boycott of all Coca-Cola products;
WHEREAS SINALTRAINAL also has a campaign focused on Nestle;
WHEREAS many leaders of SINALTRAINAL have been assassinated for organizing for workers’ rights;
WHEREAS a proposed free trade agreement between Colombia and the United States would not protect workers and their rights in Colombia and would devastate rural family farmers in Colombia and the U.S.;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Food Chain Workers Alliance will support SINALTRAINAL’s call to boycott Coca-Cola and will ban all Coke products from all Alliance offices and functions; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Alliance ask all its member organizations to similarly end the provision and sale of all Coca-Cola products including Dasani and Nestle water, Fanta, Minute Maid, Nestea, Odwalla, Powerade and Sprite; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Alliance will communicate to Coca-Cola that until the situation involving SINALTRAINAL is resolved and the safety and rights of workers in the Coca-Cola Colombian bottling plants are protected, the Alliance will continue the boycott and information campaign against Coca-Cola; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Alliance denounces the collaboration between the multinational corporations and the Colombia government to suppress workers’ rights and unionization efforts; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Alliance will not support the proposed Colombia-U.S. free trade agreement and will take action to oppose the passage of this free trade agreement.
