Event Details

Dear Friends & Supporters:

It has been an amazing twelve months. This March Cincinnati Public Schools passed the Good Food Purchasing Policy. With it CPS joins 13 other school districts around the country who are using their purchasing power to reinforce labor standards, encourage workplace democracy and promote local food. With your support the Cincinnati Interfaith Workers Center (CIWC) led this campaign for justice. The Good Food Purchasing Policy is a major victory for immigrant workers, black owned businesses, and others struggling to make school food good, clean and fair.

Please join us as we celebrate this and other victories at the May Day Brunch, an annual event to honor the past, present and future of solidarity in Cincinnati. You are invited to this year’s

 May Day Brunch!

Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 11:00am

Bell Event Center 444 Reading Road

Cincinnati, Ohio, 45202

The CIWC is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization advancing workplace justice and workplace safety for all. The CIWC’s May Day Brunch is your opportunity to hear local leaders and everyday activists share their stories, stories about the victories that are transforming the labor movement one win at a time. CPS board member Mike Moroski will be your host.

This celebration is a fundraising event. Your May Day Brunch donations sustain us all year round. Will you become a May Day Brunch Presenting Sponsor with a $5,000.00 donation? Can you be a May Day Brunch Table Sponsor with a $1,000.00 donation? Sponsors will receive tickets for 10 guests and special recognition at the event.  Online registration is optional at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/may-day-brunch-2019-tickets-59866090087. Individual tickets for $40 each can be reserved via info@cworkers.org, 513-621-5991, or click “donate” at  www.cworkers.org

The May Day Brunch recognizes CIWC’s members, volunteers and supporters. We also honour the leaders that inspire us with two marquee awards. This year’s Local Legend is Lula Odom, a national figure in workplace safety with the Chemical Workers and the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists. Our 2019 Innovator Award winner is Women Helping Women and their “On Us” campaign. On Us is an assault prevention campaign where bar-restaurant workers and customers work together through direct action to keep workers safe.

These are just a few of the people and places you can help us recognize at the May Day Brunch.   Do you know someone who should be recognized? Send your nomination toinfo@cworkers.org.

We stand strong together. Let’s also take time to sit down, learn from one another, and show support for the Cincinnati Interfaith Workers’ Center. See you at the May Day Brunch!

Subject: Invitation to Join the May Day Celebration of the Cincinnati Interfaith Workers Center

The Cincinnati Interfaith Workers Center (CIWC) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization moving our region forward on workplace justice and workplace safety for low wage earners.

Our methods are effective. Over the past 13 years, we’ve recovered over $3,300,000.00 in unpaid wages and secured over $5,000,000.00 in wage increases. For every dollar that’s donated to the organization our programs put $4.00 into the pockets of low wage families through back pay, lost wage benefits, or wage increases.

Our influence is growing.  In 2016 we helped create Ohio’s first Wage Theft prevention ordinance. In 2017 Indianapolis adopted the same reforms.  Maybe you saw the feature length article in Cincinnati Magazine (November 2017) called Web of Exploitation.  It tells the story of CIWC activists who stood up for their rights and have now helped others recover over $200,000.00.

Our orientation is practical.  We focus on what matters most to families, like safety.  Last year we became certified to provide advanced OSHA training in Spanish; we are the first local organization to do so.

On Tuesday, May 1st the CIWC will host its 5th Annual May Day Brunch. The May Day Brunch is our annual event where our supporters come together to celebrate and help raise funds. We hope you will join us.

We need your support.

If you are not a sponsor then please buy your tickets today via email: info@cworkers.org, phone: 513-621-5991 or on-line: at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/may-day-brunch-tickets-45031738141 or Facebook https://www.facebook.com/events/582270258803368/

The event is at 11:00am on Tuesday, May 1st at the Bell Event Center, 444 Reading Road, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45202.

Our keynote speaker is Amy Hanauer, founding director of Policy Matters Ohio, a state-wide policy research institute. City Council member Tamaya Dennard will be our program host. Sponsors will receive recognition at the event.

This year’s Bill Kircher “Local Legends” award will be presented to Curt Braman (in memoriam), the long time board chair of the CIWC. The Teamsters Joint Council 42 and IBT Local 63 will be recognized with the John Lewis Innovation Award, for their role in helping establish the Good Food Purchasing Policy in Los Angeles.

Now more than ever we stand together — defending the fundamental human rights and labor rights that help make the American dream a reality for working people.

We hope you will buy a few extra tickets and bring a friend who has not heard our story.

In Solidarity,
