3 Weeks ago we broke the news to you that egg processing workers in Lansing, IL walked out to protest exploitative conditions, including sexual harassment, wage disparities, and even a 27-hr shift.
Arise Chicago organized the 70 workers to sustain the walkout for several days, before the workers signed union cards with UFCW 881 and re-entered the plant.
Two days later, a worker sustained a horrific hand injury from being forced to work on machinery for which he was not trained. To prevent future safety hazards and to improve wages and conditions, workers filed for a union election, which is set for Nov. 18th.
Yesterday the workers received letters informing them of their termination.Last week, the company informed the workers they were no longer “on the list” to work and effectively locked out the workers.
Despite the company’s actions, the workers’ committee has grown bigger and stronger. They have protested daily outside the plant and prayed joined by religious leaders from throughout the area. Now is the time to show the workers that the community has their back.
RSVP here to accompany these courageous workers to win dignity and power in their workplace!
There will be a rally at 1 pm on Thursday, November 17th, outside their plant at 2963 Bernice Dr, Lansing IL before voting in their union election the next day.
