List of Local & National Events and Actions!
Join the Food Chain Workers Alliance and food workers from around the country and the world November 18-24 to celebrate the first annual International Food Workers Week. You can organize an event with workers speaking about their experiences and show videos of workers throughout the food system. Then reflect on what you learned and take action to support food workers who are organizing to improve their jobs and the food system!
Events taking place around the country on International Food Workers Week Nov 18-24 (listed by state with national actions at the end, but first, an international one!):
Support Ecuadorian banana farm workers: Over the past ten years, workers at the Los Alamos plantation in Ecuador have faced threats, intimidation and even brutal repression for exercising their rights. The plantation is owned by Noboa, which produces Bonita brand bananas for export. Send a message to Noboa/Bonita telling them to stop its repression of the workers and negotiate in good faith with the workers’ union.
Arkansas:
11/17-11/18 – Justice for Fired Walmart Worker in NW Arkansas – Cayt was fired several weeks ago from a Walmart store in Central Arkansas. This came after management found out she was organizing with her co-workers and were planning to participate in the planned Black Friday actions happening in Walmarts throughout the country. She will be speaking at 3 different occasions about this injustice and her struggle to organize for respect at the world’s biggest retailer.

11/20 6pm – Potluck Dinner with the NW Arkansas Workers’ Justice Center – 207 W. Emma Ave. Springdale, AR. – NWAWJC will be screening the documentary Food, Inc. with Spanish subtitles for its worker members.
California:

11/8 – Food Workers Awareness Film and Panel Presentation 8PM By Alliance member Farmworker Association of Florida
11/20 2pm – Commissioner Barbara Jordan is introducing the Paid Sick Days bill for Miami-Dade County at Stephen P. Clarke Building, 111 NW 1st Street). The bill introduction also coincides with the swearing of the newly elected commissioners. ROC-Miami.
New York:
11/19 12pm – Prayer vigil and press conference calling for a raise in the minimum wage at Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, 296 Ninth Avenue (at 28th Street), Manhattan – Join ROC-NY, faith leaders, low-wage workers, and community members to urge the Governor and the New York state legislature to raise the minimum wage. Close to 80% of New York voters support raising the minimum wage.

11/19 – Paid Sick Day Business Roundtable at Philadelphia City Hall at 10AM. The event will be a press conference held inside Philadelphia City Council chambers at City Hall and feature business owners who support earned sick days. 11/14-21 – Join the Coalition of Immokalee Workers for a Thanksgiving Supermarket Week of Action calling on the holdouts to join the growing tide of Fair Food (here’s looking at you Publix, Kroger, Ahold USA!)
11/23 – Take action with Wal-Mart Store and Warehouse Workers around the country on Black Friday.
All Week:
- Sign the SignOn.org petition ”Tell Congress: Don’t Let Food Workers Go Hungry” asking members of Congress to increase the minimum wage and pledging to pay a dime a day extra for food so 29 million workers will benefit from raising the minimum wage.
- Sign UNITE HERE’s Real Food Real Jobs pledge to support principles that unite the sustainable food movement with the food worker justice movement.
- Sign the petition asking Darden Restaurants to sit down with their workers to resolve issues of discrimination, wage theft, no paid sick days and low wages.
- Send a letter to your representative to support paid sick days, a necessity for workers, especially for those who work in the food industry.
