Join the Mississippi Sustainable Agriculture Network – MSAN and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers for a lively march to #BoycottWendys in Jackson, MS! Wendy’s is the only major fast food company still refusing to participate in the CIW’s Fair Food Program, a proven, worker-designed solution to decades of exploitation and abuse in the fields. We’ll be marching to the Wendy’s on High Street to amplify the call from farmworkers and consumers nationwide for farmworker justice!

WHEN:
Saturday, November 18th, 2016 from 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM

WHERE:
The march will begin outside of the High Street Farmers Market at 929 High Street and will end at Wendy’s at 1240 High Street.

SAFETY:
The march will be led by the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and the Mississippi Sustainable Agricultural Network. Members of these organizations will lead the march. Participants will stay on the public sidewalk throughout the duration of the march.

WHY:
Participants in this march will stand with farmworkers who have visited over two dozen cities nationwide as part of the “Behind the Braids” fall mobilization to promote the boycott during the months of October and November. Farmworkers and thousands of consumer allies participating in this mobilization will expose Wendy’s continued refusal to join the CIW’s Fair Food Program, a proven, worker-designed solution to longstanding human rights abuses in the fields. The Fair Food Program (FFP) has been heralded as “the best workplace monitoring program…in the US” on the front page of the New York Times and was awarded a Presidential Medal in 2015 for its “extraordinary efforts in combatting human trafficking.”

Instead of joining the Fair Food Program and doing its part to improve farm labor conditions here in the US, as have its principal competitors (McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, Subway, and Chipotle are all participating buyers in the widely-recognized human rights program), Wendy’s has chosen to stop purchasing from Florida and shift purchases to Mexico, where human rights violations are endemic and go largely unchecked. Specifically, Harper’s Magazine recently broke the news that Wendy’s purchases from a Mexican agribusiness giant, Bioparques de Occidente, that was the subject of a major slavery prosecution in 2013, when it was found to have hundreds of workers being held against their will in egregious conditions. For these reasons, farmworkers are calling on consumers nationwide to boycott Wendy’s until the fast food holdout takes responsibility for the human rights of the farmworkers that make its profits possible!

SEGURIDAD:
La marcha será liderada por la Coalición de Trabajadores de Immokalee y la Red de Agricultura Sostenible de Mississippi. Participantes permanecerán en la banqueta pública durante toda la marcha y protesta.

PORQUÉ:
Participantes en esta marcha estarán apoyando a trabajadores agrícolas que han visitado más de dos docenas de ciudades por todo el país durante la mobilización del otoño llamada “Detrás de las Trensas” para promover el boicot nacional de Wendy¿s durante octubre y noviembre. Trabajadores y miles de consumidores participando en esta movilización expondrán a Wendy’s por rechazar el Programa de Comida Justa de la Coalición, una solución diseñada por trabajadores probada ante los abusos que por décadas han existido en los campos. El Programa de Comida Justa ha sido aclamado como “el mejor programa de
monitoreo en el lugar de trabajo… en los E.E.U.U.” en la portada del New York Times y fue premiado con la Medalla Presidencial en el 2015 por sus “esfuerzos extraordinarios combatiendo el tráfico humano”.

En vez de unirse al Programa por Comida Justa y así tomar responsabilidad por mejorar las condiciones que experimentan los trabajadores agrícolas aquí en los Estados Unidos, como lo han hecho sus competidores (McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, Subway, y Chipotle son todos compradores que participan en el Programa), Wendy’s decidió dejar de comprar en Florida y mover sus compras a México, donde las violaciones de derechos humanos de trabajadores agrícolas son comunes y donde no hay monitoreo para garantizar esos derechos. En específico, la revista Harper’s Magazine recientemente reportó que Wendy’s compra del surtidor, Bioparques de Occidente, el cual fue investigado y multado por el gobierno mexicano en 2013 por mantener a cientos de trabajadores en contra de su voluntad en condiciones abusivas.

Por estas razones, trabajadores agrícolas le están pidiendo a consumidores por todo el país que boicoteen a Wendy’s hasta que la última cadena de comida rápida tome responsabilidad por los derechos humanos de los trabajadores que hacen posibles sus grandes ganancias!
